The Vauxhall Methodist Church is one of the six churches in the Bethel Circuit.
**Location**
The church was formerly located at Vauxhall, Christ Church.  It is located on Great House Avenue, Adams Castle, Christ Church. This new church Building was opened on May 5th 2011 by Rev Emmassu Pierre Superintendent   Minister at that time. 
**Hours of worship**
The Church meets for worship every Sunday morning at 9:00am and Church School at 8:30am
**Congregational Stewards**
The Congregational Stewards of the Vauxhall Methodist Church for the Church year 2020-2021 are Sisters Mary Layne, Akeeba Layne and Seobiean Alleyne.
**Organisations**
The organizations of the Church are the Women’s League, Men’s Fellowship, the Sunlight Group the Church School and the Youth Fellowship.
### History
#### A Brief Synopsis of the Vauxhall Church Building
Bro. Francis Blackman in his book “Methodism: 200 Years in Barbados” states:
‘The Vauxhall Chapel School was built in 1803.  Initially it was called Bouchers.  The 1874 report to Synod refers to Providence as a Circuit, consisting of the Providence and Vauxhall congregations. The membership of the Providence Circuit at that time was given as One Hundred and forty two (142). In 1905 the Providence and Ebenezer Circuits were amalgamated.  This arrangement lasted for ten years, after which Vauxhall became part of the Bethel Circuit. In 1932 the Church prospered and with it the work of the school, for in 1932 the building had a portion     25ft. X 21 ft added to the east to accommodate the growing school.’
Before 1976, The Chapel served as a Primary School and many members recall having their regular Sunday Morning Worship behind desks.  In 1973, a sub-committee of the Circuit Property Committee met at the Vauxhall site to examine the possibility of renovating the present building. This sub-committee observed that the building was inadequate especially for major events and had little room for expansion and that it was preferred to construct a new building.
In 1977 the then Superintendant of the Bethel Circuit, the Rev. Philip E. M. Saunders approached Mr. Colin Deane of Kingsland Estates relative to obtaining a plot of land on which to build a Chapel for the Vauxhall Congregation. Mr. Deane willingly agreed to meet with the Ministers and the Stewards of the Church on this matter.  The April 1978 Quarterly Meeting was informed that the Deane family of Kingsland had agreed to donate half acre of land for the erection of the new Vauxhall Church Building.  The Meeting agreed to purchase an additional acre of land. By 1980 the documents were handed over to the Rev. Vivian A. Comissiong, Minister with responsibility for the Vauxhall Church. 
In 1992 the purchase of the land was finalized. The Church was to be built on approximately 78,146 sq. ft. of land, all acquired from the Kingsland Estates. The project was to be a  three-phase project. There was to be a sanctuary which could comfortably accommodate three hundred and fifty (350) people. There was also to be an auditorium and a cemetery. The scheme for the erection of the Vauxhall New Church building was submitted to District Conference in 1999. The plans and all necessary documents were approved at that Conference and work on the foundations soon began in earnest with the excavation of the coral rock. 
### A  Rough Road
Although the Project did not initially go as planned with several revisions to the original plans, needed, the members and friends of the Vauxhall Congregation did not lose heart, and continued to pray without ceasing. They held on-site meetings, gave donations regularly and raised additional funds through social activities. They readily acknowledged “that the human mind plans the way, but it is the Lord who directs the steps.” (Proverbs 16:9). They concurred with the hymn writer:

 *Thy way, not mine, O Lord,* 
 *However dark it be!*
 *Lead me by Thine own hand;*
 *Choose out the path for me.*

A Light at the End of the Tunnel

In March 2006 Brother Forbes, Circuit Steward, with the assistance of the Rev. Cuthbert Edwards, District President, other Circuit officers and members of the Vauxhall congregation, made a concerted effort to restart the Vauxhall Church building project. Revised plans were again submitted to District Conference 2008 and approved. Financing was obtained through a loan secured in addition to ongoing fundraising activities.
 The Vauxhall Sanctuary was completed and dedicated on 1 May 2011. The Superintendent Minister, the Circuit Staff and all members of the Vauxhall Church took the opportunity to express their thanks to God, to the Contractor Mr. Craig Dey and his workers, and ALL other persons who would have contributed to making this vision a reality. Special thanks went out to the late Bro. Basil Forbes outgoing Circuit Steward who saw this project to its completion, and to the District President, the Rev. Cuthbert Edwards whose invaluable contributions throughout the years have been a tower of strength and support to the Vauxhall Congregation..

The Church continues to be a beacon in the Vauxhall  Community and will commemorate its tenth anniversary in 2021.

The Vauxhall Women’s League was Formed in May 1982 with Sis. Jean Mayers being our first President and Sis. Carol Taylor being the Secretary.  There were eleven persons who joined in 1982. The Providence League was responsible for starting the Vauxhall league.  In the earlier days The League held concerts with Sis. Marshall and Joseph Niles.  
In the early days, a young person was encouraged to do craft, where she learnt to make stuff dolls and this young lady who joined the league at a young age and is now the President of the Island Women’s League.  Among those who were encouraged was Sis. Amelia Brathwaite who learnt flower arranging and is now responsible with the help of Sis. Angela Hope for the flower arrangements which adorn our Sanctuary on Sunday morning and on special occasions. 
Currently, the Vauxhall Women’s League comprises 13 members.  The President of the league is Wendy Phillips who is also the Vice President of the Island Women’s League.  The Women’s League meet every 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month at 4:00 p.m.  
The Aims and Objectives of the Vauxhall Women’s League are to
- Seek to build more effective communication awareness among our women;
- Ask women to share their stories, or teach others about their experiences as a woman in Ministry;
- Develop outreach programmes  and encourage more women to come together to do some powerful service in and around our community;
- Conduct more bible study sessions and include other groups to join us;
- To encourage spiritual enrichment of members

Bible quizzes – To test our knowledge of the bible.  

Members of the League have previously attended the District retreat held in the various countries such as Tobago, St. Vincent and St. Lucia.  We celebrate birthdays by going to restaurants.
In 2018, Vauxhall took part in a competition entitled “Grow what you eat and eat what you grow" with the twenty leagues.  Our league also donated the Barbados flag, drums and fans to the church as mission and outreach.

The Vauxhall Methodist Men fellowship started in the month of December 1998.
The purpose is to coordinate men’s work in the congregation and to improve the image and purpose of men for ministry and service.
Many of the founding members are now deceased. The current President, Bro Joseph Hope is the only surviving one of the founding members.

The following ten members 10 members are: Bro. Joseph Hope, (President) Bro. Martin Belle (Vice president) Bro Hugo Walcott (Secretary/ Treasurer,) Bro. Trevor Springer (Asst. Secretary/Treasurer,) Bro. Richard Wolcott, (Public Relations Officer,) floor members are: Bros. Olivere Carter, Blair Walcott, Frank Collymore, Arthur Hoyte, Cephas Marshall.
The Fellowship meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month. 
Activities include devotions, lectures and discussions, cleaning and beautification of the surroundings of the sanctuary, visitations to the sick and home bound, Wellness and health events, movie nights, quizzes and concerts. The Vauxhall Men’s Fellowship have hosted and participated in the National Men’s Fellowship and participate in planned services especially for MCCA Men’s Lord’s day and 6 p.m. services. 
The Men’s Fellowship also socialise with other church groups and perform in the Annual Choir Christmas programmes and Lenten activities.

The Fellowship provides financial assistance to the young people and assist with the maintenance of the church building

### THE MUSIC MINISTRY (THE CHOIR)

The Choir has been in existence for more than seventy years. Former organists are Sybil Jones (organist for more 60 plus years), Matthew Morris and Ian Harewood. The current organist/Director is Dorian Best.

There are a total of thirteen (13) members. , ten (10) females and three (3) males. Rehearsal takes place at the chapel on Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. The Choir continues its ministry to the Church during worship and special occasions. The Choir has been performing well and has grown spiritually.  

The Choir holds an annual Christmas Concert and participates in a drama production for the Lenten/Easter season as well as the Annual Harvest Cantata.

### THE CHURCH SCHOOL

The Church School meets at 8:30 a.m. each Sunday. The Church school staff include

- Shenelle Ruck

They are thirty (30) children on roll.  11 boys and 19 girls.  On average nineteen (19) children attend on Sundays prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.  The students are placed in groups by age with the classes organized for ages 12-16, Ages 8-11 years and ages 5-7 years

The Church School uses the book “Son Seekers” which is very comprehensive and informative.  There is a Student Handbook and a Teacher’s Resource.  

On Youth Sundays, the children conduct worship, therefore, there is no Church School.

The Church School usually participate in the Good Friday Production, Annual Christmas Concert and the Harvest Festival in June. There is usually an Outdoors Church School session where the Children’s Fellowship will be invited to attend. 


#### THE YOUTH/CHILDREN’S FELLOWSHIP

The children and youth meet every Friday at 6:00 p.m.  Activities include Bible Study, games, cooking, hiking, movies, Lectures/Talks, and Art & Craft.

They join with the Church School in conducting Morning Worship on Youth Sundays.

The executive members of the Youth Fellowship include Trencye Thompson, Joshua Blackman

The Sunlight Group has a total of twenty-five members (25) on record.  The Committee comprises of:

### History
The South District Methodist Church is one of the six churches in the Bethel Circuit and the only Methodist Church in St. George.  South District was born through an outreach effort by the Belmont Church.  
In 1912, two members of the Belmont Methodist Church, Bros. Adams and Yearwood were seen preaching in the South District area, meetings were held in a rented building.  
In 1915, administrative action was taken, resulting in the construction of a chapel on the present site.
In 1919, the cornerstone of this building was laid by Mrs. Pile, whom we presume to be the wife of Mr. Laurie Pile, who owned several estates in St. George.
A helper in the laying of this cornerstone was Mrs. Valeria Forde, who was known to mix mortar to build the foundation.
Some of the early stalwarts from the area included: Mrs W. M. Alleyne, Mr. H. A. Tudor, Mr and Mrs Whittaker, Mr. Herbert Whittaker, Bros. Julian Eastmond, Julian St. Hill, Ms Winifred Forde.  From the Dalkeith Methodist Church congregation were Sisters Elma Bryan and Cora Alleyne-Hewitt.
In 1985, plans were approved for a washroom to be added to the building. These plans were later replaced by more extensive plans.
In 1987, Town and Country Planning duly approved the plans.
In 1993, Rev. Saunders (then Superintendent Minister of the Bethel Circuit) led a construction revival which finally saw the work to its completion.
Those whose dedication saw the annex become a reality are: Bros Basil Forbes, Stephen Lindo, Ivan Wilson, Bruce Padmore, Henderson Greenidge, Revs. Leonard Rock and Philip Saunders.

### South District Women’s League
#### A Brief History
The South District Women’s League began in October 1981.
During that time Members from sister leagues namely Providence Methodist Church and Belmont Methodist visited and inspired and assisted them in the beginning.
The League started with six members and by the time of their first enrollment the membership had increased to twelve members who were enrolled by Rev. Colton Bennett on 22nd August 1982.
The first anniversary service was held on October 19, 1982 – The theme was

The installation of officers took place in August 1984 . The officers were as follows:

Sis. Nesta Greenidge served as Secretary from 1981 to 1983 but she could not continue in this role and as a result Sis. Gloria Smith was elected as Secretary.
Over the years the Women’s League would have made their contributions toward the up-keep of the church by keeping fund raising events, and the proceeds were given to the church.
May God continue to guide and enlighten them as they continue His work.

My name is Cesney Phillips.
I became the President of the South District Women's League on the August 6, 2019.
We meet the first Tuesday of every month.
The League has adopted a child, who we provide with school supplies. 
Every Christmas we give out hampers and visit the Gentle Folkes Nursing Home.  We provide hampers to the home and fellowship with the seniors there.

**Sis Sandra Moore**
My name is Sandra Moore and I'm a teacher by profession, now retired. I have been a confirmed member of South District Methodist Church since 2000 and when I think back have always been actively involved in the life of the church from that time on. My first assignment was that of church school teacher at the 6-8 age level, which I loved. I continued to do that until 2 years ago when church school numbers dropped to such an extent that we had no young children in attendance.

I have served on various committees but O and E of which I am presently chairperson has been my longest commitment.  I spent six years (2009 - 2015) as congregational steward and I'm presently one of the property stewards. I'm also an assistant class leader.
As a small church many of the roles overlap and as such I make up one half of a cleaning group, I'm a member of the choir, part of the sales team at fundraising events, I help decorate the church at Christmas and harvest time and make myself available when necessary as many others do.
We're a small and very tight knit group.

**TESTIMONY AS A METHODIST**
by Sister Nola E. McClean (nee Millington)
(Island Women’s League President and 2nd Vice President, Bethel Circuit Women’s Commission)

> Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding, in all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths.

The Methodist Church has always been the foundation of my life as I often accompanied my maternal grandmother to meetings of the Band of Hope and the weekly morning and evening Sunday worship services at the Paynes Bay Methodist Church.
I attended Sunday School in the evenings, participated in the Harvest and Christmas Cantatas by singing in the children’s choir, recited poems and took part in several plays.  While in my early teens, I was asked to teach the tiny tots in the Sunday School, which then led to me taking over leadership of the Junior Guild after the death of the Leader Miss Clarice Hackett.
At the age of 15, I attended an Open-Air meeting on the beach front opposite Jordans Supermarket in Fitts Village, where during the altar call by the late Local Preacher Mr. Frank Moore, I was moved to go forward and answer the call to serve Jesus Christ and was then later “Received” at a Reception Service.
I became fully engrossed in the work of the Church, becoming active in the Wesley Guild, and the Junior Guild as previously mentioned, taking up the reins of Secretary of the Congregational Council, becoming an active member of the Women’s League, singing in the Children and Adult Choirs, and later becoming a founding member and Secretary of the Wesley Singers.  I was also able to attend the 1974 DYLTS in St. Lucia under the Leadership of the late Rev. Allan Kirton as a staff member, which gave me a new anointing of the Holy Spirit.
In my early 20’s, I married the late Sylvester McClean, then a Local Preacher in the Methodist Church, birthed two daughters, relocated to Chancery Lane, Christ Church, and there, I received the Right Hand of Fellowship at the Providence Methodist Church, where I quickly became active as a Choir Member, Assistant Class Leader, Member of the Women’s League and then took on the Presidency for three years whilst still carrying out duties as a Poor Fund, now Care Fund Steward.
As I searched for a place of worship when I relocated to St. George, although currently residing about ten minutes from the Ebenezer Church, I decided to maintain my fellowship in the Bethel Circuit, as I knew members and felt at home at the South District Church, where I had previously supported them by singing in the Choir every year at their Harvest.  I was also grateful, as their congregation took up a collection to assist me after my house was partially destroyed by a fire in 1994.
I am truly enjoying my fellowship here at South District, and will continue to praise God daily as the Hymn No. 428 MHB reads “I’ll praise my maker while I’ve breath….”

#### Sonia Rowe – Local Preacher
I was baptized at Bethel Methodist, by Rev. Cross.  I was always a member of the Methodist Church.  After getting married I attended St. Barnabas Anglican Church, from 1982 – 1987 because of its close proximity to my home.
From a child I attended South District Methodist and was always very involved.  My grandmother took me to church every Sunday.  Several persons from the community attended church so we all went together.  Sunday School was a must.  Reading lessons and reciting in church was an integral part of my involvement.  
I was one of the founder members of the Wesley Singers.  Ms Cora Alleyne, invited me.  Mr. Sydney Harris was one of the organizers of the Wesley Singers at that time.
On my return to Barbados, in 1993, I was asked by Bro. Basil Forbes to take up the task of Church School Superintendent and so I did.  
In 2003 – 2004 – I became a Circuit Steward.
In 2005 - I was accredited as a Local Preacher. 
I performed the duties as Circuit Auditor.
I was Congregational Steward for several years at South District.
In 2005 – 2013, I was Secretary to the Barbados Preachers Association and the Bethel Circuit Preachers Association, 2006 – 2013.
I am basically a reserved person.  I was referred to Local Preaching by Bro. Forbes.  I strongly believe that it was a calling from God.  And I know that I am lead by the Holy Spirit.  I believe that every assignment given is from God and not the Superintendent Minister.  It bothers me when I am unavailable for an appointment.  Preaching has increased my faith and brought me into a closer relationship with God.  I can see his hand in my life and trust him to show me the way. 
In this pandemic, God has been in my life in ways that I cannot even imagine.  When the pandemic struck God jut provided for us.  You can see his hand at work in our lives.  
I enjoy serving, however, one of my concerns is that I would love to see more persons getting involved in the life of the church.  More persons need to take up positions of Secretary and Chairperson in the Circuit. 


South District

The Providence Methodist Church is one of the six churches in the Bethel Circuit. The Church was established in 1832 and is situated at Providence, Christ Church. ### History of the Church
#### MR. WILLIAM REECE 
**Influence on the Establishment of Providence**
  William Reece, the proprietor of Gibbons and Pilgrim Plantations supported English Missionary Rev. William Shrewsbury in his efforts to spread Christianity to the slaves.  Rev Shrewsbury was allowed to use his large storeroom at Oistins to preach to the slaves.  Mr. Reece encouraged his slaves to attend Rev. Shrewsbury’s public worship services.  He also indicated his wish to build  a chapel on one of his estates for the benefit of the slaves. By 1822 a mission station was established at one of his estates.

#### THE FIRST CHAPEL
Mr. Reece donated land and material for the construction of a chapel.  He also provided the labour as the slaves were encouraged to work on the chapel.

The first  Providence chapel was built  in Parish Land, Christ Church.  It was called “Union” because it was located between Mr. Reece’s two estates Gibbons and Pilgrim. Mr. Reece also hoped that the central location of the chapel would influence the spread of Methodism throughout the parish. 
The chapel was opened on Sunday, October 29, 1826.  
#### THE SECOND CHAPEL
The membership at Union grew rapidly and the chapel was considered to be too small.    
Mr. Reece was impressed with the work of the missionaries among his slaves.  He donated more land at Providence for the construction of a new Chapel.   He recommended to the Methodist Missionary Society in England that a missionary should be stationed at Providence.
The new Chapel was constructed on the land on which the current church is located. It was opened on Easter Sunday, 1832.
#### THE THIRD CHAPEL
The transition period between slavery and freedom saw a decline in the membership at Providence.  However, by 1850 the membership started to increase significantly. Eventually, the chapel was considered to be too small. 
In 1862, Synod accepted the proposal to build a new Chapel.   It was built adjacent to the old Chapel and was opened on November 26, 1863.  

In 1955, The Chapel was destroyed by Hurricane Janet.   The finance and Property Committee of the circuit was indecisive about repairing the damaged building or constructing a new one.  Eventually a decision was taken to repair the damaged chapel.  It is still in existence.

#### Circuits to which Providence Belonged

The Methodist Church in Barbados implemented the circuit system in 1846.  It was known as the Barbados Circuit which comprised the Methodist churches in the island.  

The expansion of Methodism saw the need to establish a second circuit in the island.  This came about in 1865.  The churches were divided into two circuits known as Barbados First and Barbados Second.   

The churches of Barbados Second were Providence and Vauxhall in Christ Church, Ebenezer, Rices, Beulah, Shrewsbury and Supers in St Philip.
The Barbados First consisted of James Street, Bethel, Dalkeith, Belmont, Whitehall,  Paynes Bay, Selah, Hope(Bethesda) and Speightstown. 

 In 1869 a third circuit was established and consisted of  Speightstown, Selah, Hope and  Paynes Bay.

Changes were made again to the circuit system in 1874.  Two new circuits, Bethel and Providence were established.  The Providence Circuit consisted of Providence and Vauxhall. 

The 1905 Synod recommended the amalgamation of Providence and Ebenezer Circuits.  Ten years later Synod approved the request to separate the Providence and Ebenezer Circuits.  As a result,  Providence and Vauxhall were transferred to the Bethel Circuit. These two churches have been in the Bethel Circuit for over 100 years.

**Did You Know…?**
**Expressions of Praise Dance Ministry**
The ministry of dance has been a part of the modern history of Providence Methodist Church from as early as 1984.  The children of the dance group were members of the Church School and wider community and often danced at Christmas, the harvest cantata, youth service at Providence and other churches and community events.

Providence’s dance ministry began with the introduction of square dancing, folk and creative dancing by Sister Megan Goodridge.   In those days girls made up the majority of members and there were a few boys in the group. These youngsters danced at tea parties organised by the Women’s League and at other events.  

In 1991 Sister Juliette Lovell  became the leader of the dance group which continued square dancing and expanded its repertoire to include contemporary music.  One memorable event was the variety concert entitled “Through The Eighties” which showcased the versatility of the dancers.

During the 1990’s the group was under the direction of Sister Sharon Campbell. It entered the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA) and was successful in reaching the finals.

In 2003, Sister Michelle Campbell, a founder member of the Providence Dance Ministry, along with a group of church school students, worked to present a dance for the Bethel Circuit’s National Youth Expo and placed second.

The group was formally christened *Expressions of* Praise in 2004 and is under the guidance of Sisters Laura McClean and Michelle Campbell.



Providence Church

The Dalkeith Methodist Church is one of the six churches in the Bethel Circuit. The Church was established in 1874 and is situated on Dalkeith Hill, St. Michael..  The Minister in Charge is Rev. Dr. Marcelle Brathwaite.  Our present membership as at 1st September 2020 is 149, comprising 118 Females and 31 males.  
#### Services
The Church meets for worship every Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. and all are welcome.

The Church Choir meets on Fridays at 6:00 p.m.


**Historical Overview**
On the left side of the road on the way to Brittons Hill, is a church whose high bell steeple and high roof have been a beacon of light for many who pass by and especially for the residents of the Dalkeith Village, Brittons Hill, Bay Land and Culloden Road.   This church was built 146 years ago.  
The Dalkeith Methodist Chapel/school was established in 1851. Its original accommodation was provided in a wooden building, but in 1863, the Rev. Henry Hurd purchased land for 83 pounds 6 shillings and 8 pence to erect a new chapel/school. It was situated near the Garrison on Dalkeith Road, about 250 yards from the junction of Dalkeith Road and Britton’s Hill. The membership of the Chapel was 53 and the school’s roll, 72. 
 In 1874, that original wooden structure was replaced at a cost of 260 pounds and re-sited to an area behind the new concrete structure where it served as the venue for Sunday School and Youth activities. The need to expand the facilities for worship in the area led the earliest Methodists Missionaries to construct the Dalkeith Church.  Work on the building was done by the joint labour of local workers, soldiers of the British Regiment and the Royal Engineers assisted, as some of them were Methodists, occupying St. Ann’s Garrison and hence the chapel was to accommodate them and the present members. Mr. John Wilson, a Squadron Sergeant, designed the plan for the church. The Royal Engineers assisted in the construction of the strong, high wooden roof. On 9th March 1874, the cornerstone of the church was laid with Mrs. Henry Hurd laying one of the memorial stones.  The Dedication Service was conducted by the Revd. G. Irvine, at 11:00 a.m. on Monday 28th September, 1874.  The Ceremony was shared by four other ministers, Revds. A. Williams, W. George, J. Hothersal and H. Hurd.  
The present building has a seating capacity of approximately 300 and is an example of Gothic architecture designed by the Royal Engineers.
In 2005, the Church was refurbished and the entire roof was replaced. Additionally, shutters were placed on the windows.   During the period of refurbishment, the Sunday church Services and church school were held in the Britton’s Hill Christian Mission Church. The Dalkeith Church was rededicated in December 2005.  The Church was further enhanced by the extension of the Vestry and included indoor toilet facilities. The Church Hall was also refurbished, which included a new roof.
Dalkeith has the distinction of being the first place of worship in Barbados where electricity was installed. On 29th April 1911, a plaque was presented by the Barbados Light & Power Company Ltd  and placed on the exterior south wall to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Dalkeith Methodist Church as the first place of worship in the island to use electricity.

The Organ was dedicated to the Glory of God in honour of: Sis. Enid Archer, Sis. Hazel Alleyne, Sis. Beryl Clarke and Bro. Erard Crane.  While the church was being refurbished, leading up to the Centennial Celebrations, services were held in the Church Hall.

Some of the ministers who served this Church over the years are:-  The Revs. Irvine, Mattinson, Errie, Barlow, Byer, Cox, Watson, Reid, Silcox, Crosby, Furley, Harrison, Payne, Crosse, Thomas Henry, and Saunders to name a few. 
A successful Centennial Service was held in September 1974 under the supervision and direction of Sunday School Superintendent Ms. Ruth Graham
The Reverend Marcelle Brathwaite, a member of the Dalkeith Methodist Church, made history as the first Barbadian female to candidate for the Methodist Ministry.  Prior to entering the Ministry, Sis. Marcelle served as a Society Steward and was deeply involved in the outreach programmes, mainly to the persons at Glendairy Prison. 
 In 1991, she entered the United Theological College of the West Indies (UTCWI) and studied for her Diploma in Theology and concurrently with the University of the West Indies (UWI, Mona Jamaica) for a B.A. in Theology.  She graduated in 1995 and was accepted as a Methodist Minister.
Over the years many Local Preachers have come from among the members: includingg Mr. Arthur Price, Mr. I. Callender, Mr. W. W. Alleyne, Mr. Arthur Curwen, Mr. Ernest Russell, Mr. Winston Brathwaite and Ms. Elma Bryan, Bro. Francis “Woody” Blackman and Bro. Edward Williams.
Currently they are 3 fully accredited Local Preachers; Sis Nkwa Daniel (2008), Bro. Ryan Brewster, Bro. Robert Daniel (2018).

Though Dalkeith Church falls just outside the boundaries of the designated World Heritage Site, its history makes it part of our outstanding cultural heritage as it’s the only Methodist Chapel to house the Bust of co- founder of Methodism, The Rev. John Wesley, and sculpted by renowned Barbadian Sculptor, Mr. Carl Broodhagen in 1937.
There are four (4) main organisations within the church: The Choir, Women’s League, Men’s Ministry and Church School.

### Church Organisations
#### The Dalkeith Women’s League

The Dalkeith Women’s League (DWL) was founded by the English Deaconess, Sis. Gladys Cook on 14th June 1944 (in midst of World War 2, less than a decade after 1937 riots). She saw the establishment of the first President –Sis Ruth Barrow followed by such sisters as Sheila Alleyne, Edith Roach, Una Chase (beloved Mum Chase).  In more recent decades we have seen stalwart leaders such as Mavis Edwards, Undine Hazelwood, Gweneth Coward, Jennifer Cumberbatch, Bonita Wharton, Heather Alleyne, Natalie Collymore and the present president Sis. Anne Murrell.
The Motto of DWL is “Sincerity in Service”.  It is celebrating 76 years of faithful service to the church and to the Dalkeith community and around the island.  The DWL has an energetic dedicated membership of 22 women.  Some of their activities include devotional meetings in church or at homes and conducting the 5th Sunday church service.  The Women’s League participates in exchanges including rallies and socials at other women leagues; instruction in line dancing, flower arranging, use of herbal remedies among others. Informative lectures on Security, caring for the elderly and Palliative care are among the varied activities of the league. Members continue to support the other activities of the church in Missionary and Harvest donations, Choir, HW club, Evangelical outreach. Visits to the Geriatric Hospital, distribution of Christmas hampers continue as well as supporting the rallies and activities of other churches in the community.   DWL meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m.

#### The Dalkeith Men’s Ministry
The Dalkeith Men’s Fellowship restarted in January 2007.
The following 14 members - Bros. Anthony Armstrong (Vice President), Richard Best, Ryan Brewster(Floor member), Michael Clarke, Robert Daniel (Floor member)l, Louis Forde, Rupert Gittens (Treasurer), Joseph Graham, Elson King, Basil Humphrey, Rudolf Ismael, Victor Marshall, William Morris (Secretary), and Edward Williams (President), formed the revitalized group, which was renamed and rebranded Dalkeith Men’s Ministry effective  1st March 2007 to improve its image and purpose of men for Ministry and Service.
Unfortunately, 5 members have been called to their eternal home since 2007; however, Bros. Charles Bentham, Lennox Layne and Ulric Sue have joined the Ministry, and our membership remains steady at 12 with 10 active members
The Men’s Ministry meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month and its members are actively engaged in the life of the Organisation and the church, through participation in the various programs, events, and projects.  Its main fundraising Event is the Annual All Male Music and Choir Festival in October, while two main social events are the Annual Fellowship Dinner and Scenic Bus Ride are hosted in January and May, respectively.
The Men’s Ministry proudly celebrated and supported the achievements of two of its youngest members - Bro. Ryan Brewster and Bro Robert Daniel - as fully accredited Local Preachers in the MCCA on Sunday January 28, 2018.
In October 2018, the Men’s Ministry launched the “Operation Rebuild 145” Project in preparation for the Church’s 145th Anniversary in September 24th 2019. The project included the painting of all exterior Church walls and repainting the carpark and is expected to be completed in the current church year.

#### Dalkeith Church Choir
Over the years, Dalkeith Methodist Church Choir has earned a reputation of offering some interesting and enjoyable programmes – and the Annual Christmas Programme is among the best.  
This year the Choir and friends will offer the Christmas Programme entitled “Born a King” on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at 7:00 p.m.  The choir takes part in weekly Sunday services, in Circuit Services and joins with other choirs in the island when necessary.   Rehearsals are held on Fridays at 6:00 at 6:00 p.m.

## Our History
This fine Gothic chapel was opened for public worship on March 28, 1844.  The name "Bay Street Chapel" was used in reports concerning the Church up until 1848, although it appears to have been named Bethel (“The House of God”) from the beginning.  The Bethel Church became the main Church of the Bethel Circuit.

### Tracing the Development of the Church
The Bethel Methodist Church also served at least one special group in the community.  It became the Church at which some of the soldiers of St. Anne's Fort, the Garrison - Methodists, adherents and others worshipped. They had formerly worshipped at Dalkeith Church, but the number of soldiers attending increased and reduced the seating accommodation available to the members of the Church.  Consequently, the soldiers were marched all the way to the Bethel Chapel.  The association of the members of the Regiment at St. Ann's with the Methodists Church in Barbados dates to the very introduction of Methodism in Barbados in 1788.  The Church had accepted responsibility for the spiritual welfare of the Methodists and Methodist adherents among the armed forces, who numbered 160 in 1817.  So seriously was that responsibility held, that the Ministers appointed to the city Churches were required to visit the military hospital as well.  Some of those ministers appointed were the Reverends A.S. Williams, A.F. Cocks, James Payne and Charles G. Errey. When members of the army left Barbados in 1905, the number of Methodists and adherents were reduced to 126. 

 The Chapel and School, although housed in separate buildings, were by no means separate in function, as the school work was an integral part of the Bethel Methodist Chapel witness.  The wooden school house was erected on a site adjacent to that of the new Chapel and the teacher was Mr. W. Huskisson.  By 1849, Mr. Huskisson was succeeded by Mr. R. Alkins. Four years subsequently, two additional teachers were recruited, Messrs. Durant and Gill. However, the school closed its doors in 1854 due to a cholera epidemic.  At the time, the Superintendent of the Circuit felt that the school could not be reopened because, in addition to its poor financial state, the building was poorly situated.  Nevertheless, this view did not prohibit the school's revival, for in 1867, it was still functioning under the leadership of Mr. John W. O'Neal with a school roll of 78 students. Later, as the Government of Barbados gradually accepted responsibility for education, the Bethel school became defunct.
 The memory of the Quarterly meetings of April 17 and July 17, 1931, for those who attended them, must have been poignant.  The Circuit Stewards at the April meeting were Messrs Crichlow and Blades; at the July meeting O.R Grannum was elected to succeed Blades, who had died.  Grannum also became a worthy successor to Blades as Superintendent of the Sunday School and proceeded to make a contribution to the District Property and Finance Committee.  The July meeting was also the last for Rev. G.B. Byer and his wife Eileen.  Rev. Byer had the duty of paying tribute to the late Bro. Blades who had served for many years in every section of the Church.  Rev. Byer spent the last eight years of service to the Methodist Church in St. Lucia. 


### Sunday School
As Sunday School Superintendent, Mr. O.R. Grannum exercised that fairness, discipline and sense of humour which attracted boys.  He was a member of the District Synod and together with Mr. T.J. Sealy of James Street Society and Circuit made outstanding contributions to the decisions related to Property and Finance at District level.  In this, he was ably emulated by one of his Sunday School scholars, Bro. Victor Cooke.  Bro. Lloyd Mayers, Local Preacher, Leader and Sunday School Superintendent was a Christian whose service in the Church and in the community it would be difficult to overlook.  This gentleman was an inspiration to Rev. Edwin Taylor, among many others. The service of Cyril Brathwaite should not be dismissed.  This gentleman quietly projected Christianity as service to all.  The Church was his life.  His understanding of human nature, his appreciation of the activity and unpredictable behaviour of young males and his commitment, led him to be the kind of Scout Leader at Bethel which made scouting the activity of the week for several of our current community leaders.  Brathwaite, as a young man, had never been a Scout.  He had a small young people's group at Bethel and in his desire to commit the group to more purposeful endeavour, he invited Mr. Kenneth Pile to assist in establishing a Scout Troop at Bethel.  This, Mr. Pile willingly did, with that faithfulness demonstrated in his community work in scouting and other activities.  Brathwaite became a Scout Leader and together with Pile, made the Bethel Scout Troop special and more importantly, a genuine influence for good in the lives of many boys.  Among those who gratefully acknowledge their indebtedness to scouting at Bethel is Sir. Harcourt Lewis, King's Scout.  Lewis' self-assurance, skill and experience in financial matters, have caused others who are associated with him to have a feeling of trust which has made him a worthy successor of William Grannum, and Sir Archibald Cuke, Circuit Stewards of Bethel.  Lewis was the first lay treasurer of the District and a member of the Barbados Island Council.
 Bethel Sunday School was led by Lloyd Mayers as Superintendent in the 1940s serving 20 years with a roll of 400 children.  Some of the students of the Sunday School during that period were the Reverends. Leonard Rock and Keith Rae, Bro. Victor Cooke, Sir Harcourt Lewis and his son, Bro. John Mayers.  Other organizations in the Church included the Wesley Guild and the Girls League.  The Girls League was started by Sis. Marjorie Watson and they hosted an Easter Conference every year which was for a duration of four days. The ladies also attended a rally annually at a different Church.  The League also embarked on camps annually in Barbados and overseas and several other activities.  The benefit of the League ensured that there was good interaction and relationship between the Churches. 
 Within the Methodist Church, the Class system is the basis of our organization.  Each "confirmed" member is assigned to the care of a Class leader and members should attend Class meeting regularly.  The class meeting in Church is invaluable as a meeting for the group where experiences may be shared and new members introduced.  This is most needed in the Church where it is easy for persons to become lost and uncared for.  They may share their joy, burdens and also plan activities. Currently, the Bethel Methodist Church has 28 classes and the congregational roll is 431.
 
## Leadership of the Church 
The administrative and spiritual leadership of the ministers is largely responsible for the success of the work of the Church.  Reverends E. Johnson, W.B. Mattinson, B. Crosby, Crosse, E.S.M. Pilgrim and Francis Godson are among those who made Bethel the Beacon which it was during the first half of the century.  Among the lay people of the Church during the same period were Sisters Edith and Editha Inniss, Millington, Callender, Marshall, Valverdee, Hewitt, Griffith, Shepherd, Hazlewood, Hutchinson. More recently, the Bethel Congregation has been blessed with the following Superintendents and Ministers throughout the years, namely: Reverends Crosse, Crosby, W.B Mattinson, E. Johnson, Max Thomas, A. S Williams, A. J Cocks, James Payne, Charles Errey, G. B Byer, Edwin Taylor, E. S. M. Pilgrim, Francis Godson, Marshall, Derek M. ### Bethel Worship Team

Through song/voice, the worship Team, comprising 6 females and two males, has embarked on a mission to assist in enhancing the worship experience, and aid in the introduction of new worship songs to the congregation.  The Team is always willing to participate in any of the Worship Services at the Bethel chapel as requested. The Worship Team welcomes any member of the Bethel congregation.
The future aim of the Worship Team is to continue to grow in Christ and lead the congregation into new and improved worship experiences.

#### Bethel Senior Choir

The Bethel Senior Choir at present has 22 members (females 17/ males 5); comprising 11 Sopranos, 6 Altos, 2 Tenors and 3 Basses. Despite its small membership, the choir still accomplishes its mandate to minister in song during services. The Choir continue to perform at regular services on Sundays, funerals and Special services when requested.
The Choir is currently in an attrition phase and is actively seeking recruitment of new members.  The Choir meets every Thursday evening at 7:00. The Leader of the Choir is Bro. Richard Hope. The Choir engages in Outreach Ministry through acquiring items for homebound members and they sponsor a student from the Church School annually.

**Dorcas Society**

The role of the Dorcas Society is to outreach to vulnerable members of the Church and community, through assisting with toiletries, food items and other supplies as requested.
- The Society has 20 members with 15 being active.
- They meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month there is an activity planned.

The Society contributed Christmas gifts to some of the seniors in the church and made deliveries of fruit baskets to some of the church home-bound members. Flowers, fruits and ground provisions were donated to decorate the church for the harvest festival.
No fund raisers were held during the year, but plans are being made to hold one in the upcoming church year.


**Men’s Fellowship **

There are 15 members in the Fellowship with 13 of them being active.
They meet on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month.

**Objectives and Achievements**

The Fellowship established the broad objective to *support the work of the Church and the personal development of the Church's male members by maintaining a spirit of camaraderie among men through regular scheduled fellowship*. 
This objective entailed:
- Meetings focus on spiritual growth, personal growth and advancing the work of the Church;
- Exchange and prioritization of project ideas to enhance or maintain the aesthetics of the Church;
- Ensuring full completion of projects works agreed by the Fellowship for the benefit of the Church;
- Fulfilling the role of men as leaders, contributors, mentors and protectors within the Church;
- Ensuring permanent effectiveness of the Men's Fellowship.

Strategies and specific initiatives to advance the objectives were identified. Following are those strategies, initiatives and a brief status report on each initiative:
- Consistent reminders to men of the Church about the existence of regular meetings on topics of interest, personal and spiritual development and work projects undertaken by the Fellowship.
- An array of topics chosen for meeting discussions that must be of real interest to men, address challenges that men must deal with, provide real workable solutions to such challenges and include topics chosen by the Fellowship to encourage attendance.
	- Opportunities for each member, or interested male member of the Church, to lead or present a devotion or other topic for personal development 
		> Status: This was partially achieved via eight (8) out of the fifteen {15} members of the Fellowship leading invocations by rotating turns, and three (3) members leading the four (4) Church services allotted to the Fellowship during the year.

	- Thorough completion of at least three projects to improve or maintain the aesthetics of the Church
		> Status: This was achieved as three painting projects were completed: the choir stalls, the wooden columns of the sanctuary and the northern border/guard wall.
		- Maintain a high standard for all worship activities to which the men are assigned. Status: This was achieved and evidenced by accolades from members of the church.
		- Continuation of the vigilance initiative to safeguard worshippers and property during worship. 


### Marlene’s United Environmental Group

Marlene’s United Environmental Group was formed in November 2004.  Marlene’s United Environmental Group functions under the theme - 
> “Unity Is Strength and Strength is Accomplishment”.  

A Challenge by the late Basil Forbes (Circuit Steward) in July 2004 was answered by a group of members from the church. The challenge was to prepare the grounds in time for the Church’s dedication on Sunday, October 24, 2004 since no funds were available to have the work done by professionals. Both men and women from Bethel came together every Saturday and sometimes on weekdays and laboured vigorously to accomplish the task. 

It was such a successful venture and the workers were so ecstatic about their accomplishment that they decided to establish a group with the hope of assisting the church in reducing expenses in various areas. The group was then formed in November 2004 with 16 founding members. 

The membership was not at full strength since it did not comprise all of the persons who had volunteered for the challenge.  

At present there is a membership of twenty-two persons but due to health challenges, there are 17 active members who specialise in many areas, giving of their time and talents as the need arises. 

Membership is opened to anyone interested in being a member of our work force and you will be welcomed with open arms. Our hope is to continue with the upkeep of the grounds and to assist our elderly members where possible.


### Wesley Guild
The Wesley Guild at Bethel Methodist Church is the only existing one on the island. It is an accessible, open and welcoming fellowship and meetings are held on the second and fourth Thursday monthly. Membership is open to both male and female and any person can become a member. Only persons who are Methodists can hold office within the Organisation. The age range varies from children to adults.

**Aims and Objectives**
- The Guild is God-centred where it seeks to stimulate the worship of God as known in and through Jesus Christ and to enable members to develop patterns of personal and corporate devotion.
- The Guild is a meeting place seeking to promote open and honest discussion of the meaning of Christian faith in today’s world.
- The Guild is a training ground. It seeks to broaden the cultural horizons of its members for the enrichment of human life. It also provides opportunities for leadership, public speaking, planning worship and developing gifts of administration.
- The Guild is an arm of the social and caring life of the Church. It seeks to be a caring fellowship for its members and it encourages interest in the affairs of the local community.
- The Guild is a means of outreach and evangelism where it provides for many, a first point of contact with the Church and becomes a pathway to faith.

**Activities**
- Three members are involved in the St Ambrose Primary School Breakfast Programme
- Two members are involved in conducting morning devotions at St Giles Primary School
- One person is a member of the Cancer Support Services and visits patients in hospital regularly
- Members continue to visit individually and collectively during which time, bible reading, devotions and hymn sharing are done
- Assisted with school supplies for one 11 year old boy adopted from within the Church School
- The League continues to provide 39 pupils of the Charles F. Broomes, Special Education Unit with Christmas gifts, refreshments and educational supplies.
- Some members attend weekly Bible Study/Prayer Fellowship in the Church while others seek to do so at other churches within their district.

Bethel Church

The Belmont Methodist Church is one of the six churches in the Bethel Circuit. The Church was established in 1838. 
**Location:**
It is situated on My Lord’s Hill, St. Michael.
**Hours of Worship**
The Church meets for worship every Sunday morning at 9:00. a.m. 
**Congregational Stewards**
The Congregational Stewards of the Belmont Methodist Church for the Church year 2020-2021 are Brothers Edson Downes, Anthony Coward, and Sister Audrey Lovell

**Organizations**
The organizations of the Church are the Bible Study, Prayer Group, Women’s League, and the Church School. Classes meet for fellowship at various times during the year.

**History of Belmont Methodist Church**
In the 18th Century, the Methodist Church, began preaching and reaching out to the slaves and freed persons. For many, for the first time, they were hearing that they were children of God who loved them, they had souls and they as much human as their slave-masters, and they responded. The persecution, charges and trials of our National Hero: The Rt. Excellent Sarah- Ann Gill and her commitment to God and the Methodist Faith at this time is well acknowledged. Around this same time free villages began to spring up around Barbados, including in The Ivy, Licorish Village and My Lord’s Hill. 

With a Gospel of God’s love, His forgiveness and inclusion, persons were drawn to hear Methodist preachers. Preaching Places were established. In 1838, an application was sent the Bishop of Barbados, Bishop William M. Coleridge, seeking permission to establish a Preaching Place in My Lord’s Hill, and this was granted the same year. Again, it is not established if persons were meeting before this, however Belmont celebrated its 180th anniversary as a congregation in 2018. 

The exact location of the meeting place was not known, but the “Hill” is constantly referenced. in the Demerara District Synod report, reference is made to a wooden chapel 16ft X 30ft which existed in 1839 and that there was a Preaching Place where local preachers conducted services on the Sabbath. The membership then was reported as 76 for the previous year. The building was also referred to as a Chapel- School. It is believed that that building was somewhere near to this present site. In a quarterly report to M.M.C. in 1860 Rev. Hurd Superintendent of The Barbados Circuit, condemned the dilapidated condition of the wooden building and the difficulty being experienced in find a suitable piece of land for a new Chapel-School. The following year Rev. Hurd was able to report that a parcel of land was purchased for 84 pounds. 

Governor Francis Hincks laid the cornerstone for this sanctuary on October 21, 1861 and it was occupied in 1862 at a cost of 400 pounds, of which M.M.C. contributed 100 pounds and The St. Michael Vestry 100 pounds. It is reasonable to assume that the remainder was given by the members. The property there had three separate buildings. A separate building was established for the school as well as a teacher’s house The Headmaster was Mr. Thomas W. Carrington. 

In 1867, it was reported that the school and teacher’s house were in urgent need of repairs. In spite of this, the school was reported to be a very good one. This credit was given in 1867 to the then Headteacher, Mr. John Moore. It was credited “as one of the best schools in the island” by the Inspector of schools. It is not known when or why the school ceased to function, but it was succeeded by the Belmont Primary School, which still carries the same name to this day and maintains a good relationship with the church. The chapel was enlarged to its present size in 1893 at a cost of 288 pounds. In 1909, a quarter acre of land was bought, and a house built for a second minister in the circuit. This was located approximately 100 metres away. This was sold in 1953 for 2700 pounds and a lot bought in Welches Terrace for 415 pounds, on which the present Belmont Manse stands.

Many of the early Belmont worshippers were craftsmen, carpenters, masons and other skilled workers. One of the best-known families is the Tudors. Mr. Harold A. Tudor was a Local Preacher, Class Leader and Choir Master. He and his first wife, Mary Rosanna, were parents of H. A. Tudor Junior. He was the father of the late Canon Harold Tudor, J. O. Tudor, Society Steward and Circuit Steward of James Street, Inez Tudor, Organist here, Luther Tudor, Local Preacher in this Circuit and Octavia Wiltshire, mother of Rev Errol Wiltshire. Bro. Tudor adopted the South District Church, which was developed as an outreach of Belmont and opened in 1919. Another notable family in Belmont is the Lovell Family. The family came originally from St. John and settled in the area.  The father and mother had four sons and one daughter: Samuel, DacCosta , John,  and Carlotta. Samuel and Dacosta both served as Society Stewards and John served as a Local preacher for over 60 years and also as Organist, Choir Director, Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent and along with some then young people was forefront in erection of the hall which was named in his honouur in 2014 Carlotta was best known for her singing and hymn writing There were also some other well-known names including the Workmans, Seymour and his wife Gwendoline Marshall, and James and his wife Ilene Maynard.                

Many Ministers, both local and from other lands, have served this church over the years. They, along with the Organists, Sextons, Sunday Superintendents and Teachers, Society, Congregational, Care Fund and Property Stewards and all others have given heartfelt service to this Belmont Methodist Church. Our present Minister is the Rev. Pearson Blackman, Sis. Rosline Selman is the Sexton and Bro. Olivier GCM is the Organist.

### **Organisations**
**Church School**
The Church School has on average about 25 -30 students who attend regularly. The Church school activities commence at 9:30 a.m. except on first Sunday when the students first go to Sunday school and go into church around 10:00 a.m. for communion. Jacqueline Hope is the Sunday School superintendent

The Belmont Choir has sixteen members and is directed by Bro Kumar Whitehead. The Belmont Choir practice on Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. The choir organises two programmes; a Good Friday recital and the Annual Christmas Programme which is held on the Tuesday before Christmas.

**Women’s League**
The Women’s League dates back to the sixties and currently has a membership of ten persons with six active. The Women’s League meets every other Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. The activities include devotions, bible study, social events including birthday celebrations. The members continue to provide service to the shut-ins through visitations and provision of care items.
The Women’s League conducts the Women’s League Service on Fifth Sundays. 
The league participates in National Island League including the Island Christmas social and attend the MCCA Women’s and Men’s events.

**Youth Group**
The children and youth of the Belmont Church meet on Fridays at 6 pm. Some of the activities include cooking, bible study. The youth visit with other groups in the circuit and island-wide.

(i) To receive and review the Circuit Stewards’ quarterly report.
(ii) To receive and approve the annual statements of income and expenditure of the Circuit for presentation to the District Conference.
(iii)To audit semi-annually or annually the accounts of the Congregations and institutions in the Circuit.
(iv) To prepare a Circuit budget for the ensuing year for adoption at the March meeting of the Circuit Council.
 (v) To ensure the payment of all financial obligations, e.g. assessments, salaries, grants, insurances.
(vi) To consider and make recommendations to the Circuit Council on all financial matters with which the Circuit is concerned, including investments.
(vii) To oversee and ensure that all local and circuit property – chapels, manses, buildings, etc. is kept in good repair.
(viii) To ensure that all property owned by the Church is properly registered, and that Title Deeds and certificates of ownership are in safe custody.
(ix) To consider and make recommendations for the development of circuit property, including new the purchase of new property.
(x) To ensure that all properties are adequately insured.
(xi) To appoint sub-committees for finance and for property and for the performance of specific functions as is desirable. (Persons who are not members of the parent committee may be appointed to a sub-Committee).
(xii) To supervise the work of commissioned lay workers in administration.
(xiii) Any other function in relation to circuit property and finance of similar nature to the above within the purview of the committee.

(i) The Resources and Development Committee shall make reports and recommendations to the Circuit Council on all financial matters with which the Circuit Council is concerned.

(vi)  A representative of the Board of Management of the Day Schools in the Circuit.
(vii)  Not less than three and not more than twelve members appointed by the Circuit Council.
(viii) Other resource persons deemed necessary, and co-opted by the Committee who shall have       
         the right to speak but not to vote. 

*Functions.*

(i)      To review, organise, extend and promote work among children, youth, young adults, men and women and to ensure that adequate provision is made for their Christian education, nurture and spiritual growth.
(ii)     To promote co-operation among the organisations in the Congregations, including conventions, competitions, special observances, circuit enterprises and community service.
(iii)    To promote and develop the work of the Church Schools and uniformed organisations.
(iv)    To identify and train suitable persons for leadership roles in all the organisations and institutions in the Circuit. 
(v)      To receive and consider the semi-annual and annual reports and statistical returns of all Organisations and Institutions, and to report to the Circuit Council.
(vi)     To supervise the work of commissioned lay workers in Christian Education.
(vii)    To co-ordinate, promote and extend the work of educational institutions and to provide adequate chaplaincies to these institutions.
(viii)   To appoint its own chairperson and secretary from among its members.
(ix)     To ensure that Methodist teaching is widely inculcated among the members of the Church.

(ii)To encourage and extend the witness of the Church by all means at its disposal through the planting of new Congregations in new and developing areas.
(iii) To stimulate and develop an effective ministry to institutions within the Circuit
(iv)To co-ordinate and promote the work of Christian Stewardship and Christian Social Witness throughout the Circuit
(v) To support ecumenical relationships and assist in ecumenical ventures among the Churches and other religious bodies in the Circuit
(vi) To identify social projects and formulate proposals for adoption and implementation by the Circuit Council.
(vii) To promote and encourage the spiritual and functional growth of members by ensuring that suitable literature is made available to the Circuit.
(viii) To supervise the work of commissioned lay workers in evangelism.

Care Fund
Our Care Fund is the way that the Church supports any individuals or vulnerable families that may present with particular needs. Funds are collected from the congregation and the Care Fund Stewards identify persons to whom funds are distributed. Members are also encouraged to increase their giving to the Care Fund.

Five Loaves Two Fishes Ministry 
A FIVE LOAVES TWO FISH MINISTRY was implemented to assist persons directly affected by the pandemic and was launched on September 26, 2020. As a result of the COVID 19 Pandemic, it was discovered that many more persons were in need of assistance, and that the Care Fund was not adequate to meet the current needs. Our reach has expanded as well and includes local congregation, communities and schools and includes payment of utility bills. 
This initiative is based on the story of the “Feeding of the Five Thousand” when Jesus blessed the loaves and fish and they increased.
Members are encouraged to bring what they can, however small, in cash or kind. Non-perishable food items may be placed in food collection bins in the congregations

EVANGELISM
Why Evangelise?
Jesus’ mission while He was upon the earth was to [seek and to save the lost](https://gewatkins.net/rich-man-and-lazarus-sermon-outline/) (Luke 19:10). Jesus commanded the Church as the body of Christ, to continue His mission. He calls us not only to come to Him but to go for Him. If we are part of God’s family, our mission is mandatory, not optional. 
*“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age” ( Matthew 28:19-20 NRSV).*
What is Evangelism?
Evangelism, the communication of the gospel message, includes a warning, an explanation and a call. Evangelism :
- 
warning people about sin and the consequences of sin (John 16:8); 
- 
an explanation of God’s remedy for sin-(Acts 8:29-35; 2 Corinthians 5:21); and 
- 
it gives a  clear call to repent (to turn from sin and to turn toward God) and believe the gospel, by faith (Mark1:15; Luke 13: 1-50).

Programme Of Missions - Mission & Evangelism Sunday
The Circuit M & E Committee will launch the Programme of Missions to the Community on Covenant Lord’s Day 7th January 2021. 
 In preparation for this activity, M & E Committees in each congregation will prepare their teams for visitation between November 2020 and December 2020 as follows
- Conducting evangelism Training for their teams
- Engaging in Prayer and Fasting 
- Prayer walking in their communities. 
Sis. Dr. Evelyn Mc Collin will prepare a brief Ceremony to be used in all the Churches on Covenant Lord’s Day to launch this aspect of the Mission & Evangelism programme.


Mission and Evangelism

The Rev. Adrian S Odle, a native of Barbados, was trained for the Methodist Ministry at the United Theological of The West Indies, Mona, Jamaica from 1987-91. Rev. Odle graduated with the Bachelor of Art in Theology (B.A.) UWI hons, The Diploma of Ministerial Studies and a Certificate in Mission and Evangelism.

He did post graduate studies at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, where he pursued the STM (Master of Sacred Theology) in Pastoral Theology and Psychology.

He has served as in ministry in the Islands of St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados.

He is also currently serving as the Chaplain to the Barbados Fire Service and second Vice President of the Barbados Christian Council.

Rev Adrian Odle

Greetings everyone,

I am Reverend Carol-Jean Richardson, from the twin mountain peaks island of St. Lucia. I am a Probationer Deacon stationed in the Bethel Circuit of Barbados, in the South Caribbean District of the MCCA. I am assigned to the Circuit Organizations and Education Committee to work with children and the youth and I also preach.

In my journey in the Methodist Church, I have been the President of Methodist Women in Action, Member of the Methodist Church Choir, Care Fund Steward and Member of the Prayer Group.

Prior to Ministry, I was an Administrative Secretary, but was inspired in answering my call by Rev. Barbara Lake, my deceased father who was passionate about the Bible, and deceased sister, Evangelist Sheila Mary Richardson.

Committing my life to God gives me an opportunity to serve God and to serve God’s people. I have learnt from gardening, my favourite hobby, that it takes time to delight in the produce of your hard work and that this same patience is needed in leading someone to Christ. It is a pleasure and a blessing to meet you.

Rev. Carol-Jean Richardson

I pursued a Diploma (UTCWI) and Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theology (UWI) respectively in Jamaica between 1991 and 1995. Thereafter, I became a Minister of Religion with the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas (MCCA) in 1994. After studies, I worked in Panama for five years, Trinidad and Tobago for nine years, St. Vincent and the Grenadines for three years and Barbados for five years.

During 2005 and 2008 I acquired basic and advanced certificates in Rape Crisis Counselling while in Trinidad. Starting in 2009, in conjunction with Codrington College and the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy (CPSP), I started training in the art of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPET). I received my Doctorate in Psychology from Graduate Theological Foundation (GTF) in 2017 and my Masters’ in Philosophy, in Theology from the UWI (Cave Hill campus) in 2018. In 2019, I completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning with the UWI (Cave Hill campus).

Apart from proclaiming the Word of God, I am employed by Codrington College as a Part-time Lecturer in the discipline of Clinical Pastoral Education Training.

I love outreach ministry and have a passion for pastoral care which include helping others, prison ministry, visitation to the sick, counselling/chaplaincy and intentional listening to persons who need to share. My pastimes are going to the beach, reading, and watching television.

My continuing desire is to serve God in every area of Pastoral Care. He trained me in this discipline at a crucial time in my life when I needed to understand self-care and how to balance it with the care of others. I am committed to the call to practice the “Care/Cure” of the Soul” and to teaching CPET since there is a great need for this type of chaplain/counselling/caregiving ministry in our Caribbean islands.

It is ironic how life happens; I wanted a clinical and missionary career and God has blessed me with both my heart’s desires. I am trusting in his faithfulness, grace, and mercy, as I continue to offer myself to Him and to the service of others.

Rev Marcelle Brathwaite

Rev Pearson Blackman , a Barbadian, started his career as a Biology teacher at the Parkinson Secondary School, before his call to Ministry. He started as local Presbyter and completed studies at UTC in Jamaica.

Rev Blackman holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in History and a Diploma in Education and a Certificate in Educational Management and Administration, all from the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus.

Reverend Blackman started at a local preacher in the early seventies and served in the Bethel Circuit, South Trinidad Circuit, North Trinidad Circuit and retired as a Superintendent Minister in the Ebeneezer Circuit. He is currently attached to the Bethel Circuit as a Supernumerary.

He is married to Sis Thelma Blackman and has three children and three grandchildren.

Rev Pearson Blackman

Dr. Evelyn McCollin is a veteran teacher with 46 years' teaching experience. Subsequent to teaching in Barbados for about seven years, she migrated to the Bahamas in 1971, where she taught at St. John's College Secondary School for 16 years. Sis. McCollin later joined the faculty of the College of the Bahamas in 1987 as a History Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences. As an adult Educator, Dr. McCollin served as Assistant Director, responsible for the Upgrading Department in the Center for Continuing Education, from May 1999 to August 2000. She conducted workshops on Teaching Methods for Adult Learners and presented Papers at Conferences. She retired from the College of the Bahamas as an Associate Professor in 2010 and returned to Barbados.

In 1968, Sis. McCollin received a Bachelor’s Degree in History and English from the University of the West Indies. Later, she read for a Master of Education Degree in Secondary School Administration from the University of Miami. In 1991, this erudite lady completed a Teacher’s Certificate from the Joint Board of Teacher Education in association with the University of the West Indies and the College of the Bahamas. Thereafter, in 1998, she read for a Doctorate in Adult Education from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Dr. McCollin is a born again spirit-filled believer in Christ. She initiated the Student Christian Movement at St. John's College. This passionate woman for God was a member of Bahamas Faith Ministries founded by Dr. Myles Munroe for 30 years. It was within this ministry, where she received sound Biblical teaching and matured in the knowledge of the Word. In addition, she served in the Ministry as Kingdom Care (i.e., Cell-group) leader, Counsellor and participated in a myriad of outreach endeavours to many of the Family Islands in The Bahamas.

This devout Christian lady is well qualified and experienced to deliver content in in the area of 'Facilitating Adult Learning'. She ministered as an Elder at PFDM Prophetic Favor and Deliverance Ministries. Dr. McCollin has been conducting Bible Studies on Wednesday nights since April this year. She treated to topics such as: How to Pray, Spiritual Gifts, Praise and Worship, Spiritual Warfare, The work of Angels, Divine Healing, and the Names of Jesus.
